Irresistible Cheeseburger Sliders, hot out of the oven and ready to serve.

There’s an undeniable allure to a perfectly crafted cheeseburger – it’s hearty, deeply flavorful, and wonderfully satisfying. My goal with this recipe was to capture everything we love about a classic cheeseburger and transform it into an incredibly easy slider format. The result is a dish that’s significantly simpler to prepare, yet makes no compromises on the rich flavors and delightful textures that make cheeseburgers a perennial favorite.

Sliders are essentially miniature burgers, making them incredibly versatile. They can be served as a crowd-pleasing party appetizer, a satisfying snack, or even a fun main entree. I particularly love how easily adjustable this recipe is; whether I’m hosting a large birthday party, tailgating for game day, or just need a quick dinner for the family on a busy school night, these sliders are my go-to. They take the stress out of cooking for many, ensuring everyone gets a taste of cheesy, beefy goodness without keeping you stuck in the kitchen for hours.

Instead of the tedious process of forming and grilling individual patties, this recipe streamlines the cooking. We create a savory ground beef mixture, generously tossed in a delectable burger sauce, which forms the core filling. This flavorful beef is then layered between soft King’s Hawaiian buns, crowned with a generous amount of melted cheese and a hint of fresh onion. A simple brush of our special garlic butter sauce over the buns before baking creates a golden, aromatic finish. Just assemble everything, pop it in the oven, and in under an hour, you’ll have a tray of hot, gooey, and utterly delicious cheeseburger sliders ready to disappear!

Key Ingredients for the Perfect Sliders

Crafting exceptional cheeseburger sliders starts with a selection of quality ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in achieving that perfect balance of savory, sweet, and cheesy goodness:

A flat lay image displaying all key ingredients for cheeseburger sliders: ground beef, butter, fresh parsley, minced garlic, ketchup, mustard, relish, King's Hawaiian rolls, American cheese, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, diced onion, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
All the essential ingredients for creating these mouthwatering sliders.
  • Ground Beef: I recommend using lean ground beef (85-90%) for this recipe. Leaner meat means less excess grease during cooking, which helps prevent soggy buns and makes draining much easier. It still delivers a rich, beefy flavor perfect for the filling.
  • King’s Hawaiian Rolls: These are the star buns of our sliders! Their signature soft, fluffy texture and subtle sweetness perfectly complement the savory beef and tangy cheese. The slight sweetness creates a delightful contrast that truly elevates the slider experience. If Hawaiian rolls aren’t available, soft brioche or regular dinner rolls can be good alternatives, though they may lack the unique sweet note.
  • Cheddar Cheese: A cornerstone of any great cheeseburger, cheddar brings a sharp, tangy flavor that cuts through the richness of the beef. When melted, it adds a beautiful golden hue and a classic burger taste.
  • American Cheese Slices: While cheddar offers flavor, American cheese delivers the ultimate melt. Its incredible meltability creates that wonderfully gooey, creamy, and irresistible layer that stretches with every bite, ensuring maximum cheesiness.
  • Onion: Finely diced onion is sautéed with the ground beef, adding an essential aromatic base and a subtle sweetness as it caramelizes. You can use either red or yellow onions based on your preference; yellow onions tend to be sweeter when cooked.
  • Garlic Powder and Onion Powder: These dry seasonings are fundamental for building deep, savory flavor in the ground beef. They provide a consistent, robust seasoning that permeates every morsel of meat without overpowering it.
  • Mustard (for the beef): Adding a touch of mustard directly to the ground beef just before it finishes cooking is a game-changer. It helps to enhance the caramelization of the meat, locking in its savory juices and adding a subtle tang that deepens the overall flavor profile. Trust this secret ingredient!
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This ingredient is crucial for adding a layer of umami depth to the ground beef. It enhances the savory, meaty flavor and helps keep the beef filling wonderfully moist and tender after cooking.
  • Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Mustard (for the burger sauce): These three form the classic creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet base of our special burger sauce. Using real mayonnaise ensures a rich, smooth consistency, while ketchup provides that essential tomato sweetness, and yellow mustard adds its characteristic zing. Dijon mustard can be used for a slightly more sophisticated, spicier kick.
  • Relish: Sweet pickle relish adds a burst of sweet-tart flavor and texture to the burger sauce, mimicking the crunch and tang of pickles on a traditional burger.
  • Garlic (minced): Freshly minced garlic is added to both the burger sauce and the garlic butter topping for an authentic, pungent aroma and flavor that elevates both components. Always opt for fresh garlic for the best results!
  • Fresh Parsley: Diced fresh parsley is incorporated into the garlic butter, providing a fresh, herbaceous note and a vibrant pop of color. While dried herbs can be substituted, fresh parsley offers a superior aroma and taste.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: Essential for seasoning the beef to taste, ensuring every bite is perfectly balanced. Kosher salt is preferred for its clean taste and texture.

Exciting Slider Recipe Variations

The beauty of these sliders is how easily they can be adapted and customized. Get creative with these delicious variations:

  • Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders: For an irresistible crunch and smoky flavor, layer a few slices of crispy cooked bacon on top of the meat mixture before adding the top layer of cheese and buns. Bacon bits can also be mixed directly into the beef filling for integrated flavor.
  • Philly Cheesesteak Sliders: Transform your sliders into a taste of Philadelphia! Use thinly sliced steak instead of ground beef, sauté it with caramelized onions and bell peppers, and top with provolone cheese for a gooey, authentic Philly Cheesesteak experience.
  • Homemade Brioche Buns: If you’re feeling ambitious and have extra time, elevate your sliders by making your own brioche dinner rolls from scratch. The rich, buttery sweetness of brioche is an exquisite pairing for savory fillings.
  • Pulled Pork Sliders: For a hearty and tender option, slow cook pork shoulder in your favorite BBQ sauce until it’s shreddable. Pile the juicy pulled pork onto the Hawaiian rolls and top with a crisp coleslaw and tangy pickles for mouthwatering Pulled Pork Sliders.
  • Hawaiian Pizza Sliders: Give your sliders a tropical twist! After layering the beef and cheese, add some grilled or roasted pineapple slices and a thin slice of ham for a sweet and savory Hawaiian-inspired delight. A sprinkle of dried oregano can enhance the “pizza” feel.
  • Chicken or Turkey Sliders: For a lighter alternative, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken. Be sure to season it well, as these meats are leaner and can benefit from a bit more moisture and flavor. You can even adapt our chicken philly cheesesteak concept here for a unique twist.
  • Spicy Jalapeño Sliders: For those who love a kick, add finely diced fresh or pickled jalapeños to the beef mixture, or scatter them on top of the cheese before baking. A drizzle of sriracha in the burger sauce also works wonders.
  • Mushroom Swiss Sliders: Sautéed mushrooms and a slice of melty Swiss cheese can turn these into a gourmet experience, offering earthy depth and a rich, nutty flavor.

Pro Tips for Making the Best Sliders

Follow these expert tips to ensure your cheeseburger sliders are perfectly delicious every time:

  • Drain Excess Fat: This is crucial! Before assembling, always remove any excess fat and liquid from the cooked ground beef mixture. This prevents the Hawaiian rolls from becoming soggy and greasy, ensuring they remain soft and delicious. Using lean ground beef (like 85/15 or 90/10) will naturally reduce the amount of fat released.
  • Even Layering is Key: For consistent flavor and texture in every slider, make sure to layer the ground beef mixture and cheese evenly across the entire surface of the rolls. This way, each bite offers the perfect balance of beef, cheese, and bun.
  • Add a Spicy Kick: If you love a bit of heat, try squeezing a zig-zag of sriracha or your favorite hot sauce over the meat mixture before adding the top layer of cheese. You can also mix finely diced jalapeños (fresh or pickled) into the beef.
  • Cover with Foil for Perfect Melt: To ensure the cheese melts thoroughly without the buns becoming too browned too quickly, consider loosely covering the sliders with aluminum foil for the first 10 minutes of baking. Remove the foil for the last few minutes to allow the tops of the buns to get golden and slightly crispy.
  • Don’t Overcook: Hawaiian rolls are delicate. Overcooking can dry them out and make them tough. Keep a close eye on your sliders in the oven; once the cheese is fully melted and bubbly and the tops are golden brown, they are ready!
  • Brush Inside the Buns: Don’t skip brushing the inside of the buns with garlic butter. This adds an extra layer of flavor and helps prevent the buns from absorbing too much moisture from the filling, keeping them deliciously soft.

What to Serve with Cheeseburger Sliders

Cheeseburger sliders are incredibly versatile and pair well with a wide array of side dishes. Classic choices like crispy French fries or perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries are always a hit. But why stop there? Get creative with these delightful accompaniments:

  • Creamy Mac and Cheese: The ultimate comfort food pairing, rich and gooey smoked mac and cheese offers a delightful contrast to the savory sliders.
  • Hearty Potatoes and Onions: Savory fried potatoes and onions provide a rustic and filling side that complements the beefy flavor perfectly.
  • Spicy Cajun BBQ Wings: For a zesty kick, serve your sliders with a side of flavorful crispy oven-baked cajun bbq wings.
  • Fresh House Salad: A crisp and light simple house salad offers a refreshing balance, cutting through the richness of the sliders with fresh greens and a tangy dressing.

To round off your meal, consider a refreshing beverage like a vibrant mango mojito or a classic lemonade. These pairings ensure a well-rounded and enjoyable dining experience for everyone.

Storage and Reheating Your Sliders

To enjoy your delicious sliders beyond serving day, proper storage and reheating are key:

  • Storage: Any leftover cheeseburger sliders or extra ground beef filling should be stored in separate airtight containers. The beef filling can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Assembled sliders are best stored refrigerated in an airtight container for 1-2 days, though the buns may lose some of their initial crispness.
  • Reheating: For best results, reheat cheeseburger sliders in an oven preheated to 350°F (175°C). Place the sliders on a baking sheet, loosely cover them with foil to prevent drying, and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until heated through and the cheese is re-melted. Avoid using a microwave, as it can make the buns too soft, soggy, or rubbery. If reheating frozen beef filling, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight before gently warming it in a skillet or oven.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sliders

What makes a burger a slider?

Sliders are essentially miniature versions of classic burgers. The primary difference lies in their size and often the type of bread used (typically smaller, softer buns like Hawaiian rolls). Any toppings you’d find on a full-sized burger can also be incorporated into a slider, making them incredibly versatile and fun to eat.

What type of beef should you use for sliders?

I highly recommend using lean ground beef, such as 85% lean or 90% lean. This choice minimizes the amount of grease released during cooking, which is crucial for preventing the delicate slider buns from becoming soggy. Lean beef still provides excellent flavor while making the overall preparation cleaner and the final product more enjoyable.

Can you make cheeseburger sliders ahead of time?

Absolutely! This recipe is fantastic for make-ahead preparation. You can fully cook the ground beef filling and prepare the special burger sauce a couple of days in advance. Store them separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to serve, simply take them out, assemble the sliders, and pop them in the oven to bake. This significantly reduces your prep time on the day of your event.

Can I freeze assembled cheeseburger sliders?

While you can freeze the cooked ground beef filling separately, freezing fully assembled sliders is generally not recommended. The texture of the Hawaiian rolls can become mushy or dry after freezing and thawing, and the cheese might not reheat as smoothly. It’s best to assemble and bake them fresh, or prepare the filling in advance and assemble right before baking.

What is the best way to prevent soggy buns?

Several steps help prevent soggy buns: 1) Use lean ground beef to reduce grease. 2) Thoroughly drain any excess fat from the cooked beef before mixing it with sauce. 3) Brush the inside of the buns with garlic butter – this acts as a barrier. 4) Don’t overdo the sauce directly on the buns. 5) Bake at the correct temperature for the recommended time.

Cheeseburger sliders with Hawaiian Rolls have the juicy, cheesy, and beefy goodness of classic burgers minus the hassle of making and flipping patties. Serve these at potlucks and gatherings or enjoy them on your own for a quick snack!

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Baking Sheet
  • Mixing Bowls

Ingredients

Special Burger Sauce

  • 1/3 cup Mayo
  • 2 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Mustard (yellow)
  • 1 tbsp Relish
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • Pinch Kosher Salt

Cheeseburger Sliders

  • 1 Medium Onion (diced)
  • 1 lb Ground Beef (lean recommended)
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt (more or less as desired)
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tbsp Mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 12 Hawaiian Slider Rolls
  • 8 slices American Cheese
  • 8 slices Cheddar Cheese

Garlic Butter

  • 6 tbsp Salted Butter (melted)
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Parsley (diced)
  • 3 cloves Garlic (minced)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small bowl, combine all the burger sauce ingredients (mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish, minced garlic, sugar, kosher salt) and whisk until smooth. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil and warm over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it’s fragrant and softened, beginning to brown.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet with the cooked onions. Season the beef with 1 tsp kosher salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, and 1 tsp onion powder. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink.
  4. Stir in 1 tablespoon of mustard and 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce into the cooked beef mixture. Mix well to combine. Remove the skillet from the heat and taste, adjusting salt and pepper as needed.
  5. Transfer the cooked ground beef mixture to a bowl. Using a paper towel or a spoon, carefully drain any excess grease from the beef. Then, add 1/4 cup of the prepared burger sauce to the ground beef and mix thoroughly until evenly coated. Set aside.
  6. Prepare the butter topping: In a small bowl, combine the 6 tablespoons of melted salted butter, 1 tablespoon of diced fresh parsley, and 3 cloves of minced garlic. Stir well.
  7. Take your block of 12 Hawaiian slider rolls and, using a serrated knife, carefully slice them in half horizontally, creating a top and bottom layer without separating the individual rolls. Place the bottom halves of the buns onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush the inside of both the bottom and top halves of the buns generously with the garlic butter mixture. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of this mixture for brushing the tops of the buns later.
  9. Arrange 4 slices of cheddar cheese and 4 slices of American cheese evenly over the bottom layer of the buttered buns. This will create a sturdy cheese base.
  10. Evenly spread the seasoned ground beef mixture over the first layer of cheese. Next, place the remaining 4 slices of cheddar and 4 slices of American cheese on top of the beef.
  11. Carefully place the top halves of the buttered Hawaiian rolls over the beef and cheese layers, completing your slider assembly.
  12. Brush the tops of the assembled buns with the remaining garlic butter mixture. For a classic burger look, sprinkle sesame seeds generously over the top halves of the rolls.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 14-16 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbling, and the tops of the buns are golden brown and slightly toasted.
  14. Remove from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve hot with extra burger sauce on the side!

Notes

  • Remove excess fat and liquid from the beef before assembling the sliders to avoid getting the buns all soggy and wet. Using lean meat will also lessen the amount of fat released from the beef.
  • Layer the toppings evenly so that everyone gets the same amount of ground beef and cheese in their sliders.
  • Add a spicy kick to your baked cheeseburger slider by squeezing some sriracha or any hot sauce on top.

Slider Recipe Variations

  • Add a few slices of crispy bacon on top of the meat mixture for crunch and extra flavor!
  • Enjoy all the goodness of Philly Cheesesteak Sliders with its tender steak, caramelized onions and peppers, and gooey cheese.
  • If you’ve got more time to spare, slow cook some pork in bbq sauce, shred it, and make mouthwatering Pulled Pork Sliders topped with coleslaw and pickles.
  • The ham and cheese combo never fails! Introduce some sweetness into this savory slider by adding some pineapple slices, preferably grilled or roasted, on top.
  • If you don’t have ground beef, you can use ground turkey or chicken instead.
