Introduction to Decadence

This prosciutto mac and cheese recipe transcends the realm of a mere side dish, transforming a beloved classic into an elegant culinary masterpiece. It’s not just macaroni and cheese; it’s an experience crafted with the finest ingredients, designed to captivate your senses. The foundation of its extraordinary flavor lies in a carefully curated blend of my favorite cheeses from Murray’s Cheese – the nutty Gruyère, the sharp white cheddar, the sweet Gouda, the smoky smoked mozzarella, and the robust Asiago. This harmonious ensemble creates the ultimate, melt-in-your-mouth mac and cheese that will leave a lasting impression.

The magic continues with tender pasta enveloped in an unbelievably creamy, cheesy sauce, generously studded with savory, crispy chopped prosciutto. And to elevate it further, a golden-brown topping of panko breadcrumbs and delightfully crunchy French onions provides a textural contrast that completes this extraordinary dish. Prepare to impress your guests and elevate any meal into a memorable occasion with this exquisite baked pasta.

Why This Prosciutto Mac and Cheese Stands Out

What makes this particular mac and cheese recipe truly exceptional? It’s a combination of thoughtful ingredient selection and meticulous technique. My husband declared it the best macaroni and cheese he had ever tasted, a sentiment echoed by our neighbors who insist this is the only mac and cheese they want on their Thanksgiving table for all eternity! When you combine a five-cheese blend, all sourced from the renowned Murray’s Cheese, with the delicate, salty richness of prosciutto, the result is nothing short of incredible.

Unlike standard recipes, this version incorporates specific elements that ensure unparalleled depth and complexity. The hint of chicken broth infusing the pasta, the subtle tang from sour cream, and the surprise pockets of gooey cream cheese all contribute to a flavor profile that is both comforting and sophisticated. The crispy prosciutto adds a layer of savory umami, while the toasted breadcrumb and French onion topping delivers an addictive crunch that makes every spoonful a delight. This is more than just a dish; it’s a celebration of flavor and texture, meticulously balanced to deliver a truly unforgettable comfort food experience.

Ingredients for Ultimate Flavor

A vibrant display of fresh ingredients laid out for making mac and cheese, including various blocks of cheddar, asiago, smoked mozzarella, gouda, and gruyere cheeses, alongside elbow pasta, sour cream, milk, heavy cream, cream cheese, and a selection of aromatic seasonings.
All the essential ingredients for crafting this luxurious mac and cheese.

The foundation of any great mac and cheese lies in its ingredients. For this recipe, quality is key to achieving that extraordinary taste.

The Pasta

I traditionally opt for elbow macaroni pasta or cavatappi pasta. While you can certainly experiment with other shapes like shells or penne, I find the classic elbow macaroni holds the creamy sauce beautifully within its curves, delivering that satisfying texture in every bite. The ridges of cavatappi also excel at clinging to the rich cheese sauce, ensuring maximum flavor distribution. Sticking to these trusted shapes truly honors the spirit of this classic dish while allowing the other ingredients to shine.

The Secret to Flavorful Noodles: Chicken Broth

This is a game-changer! Instead of just plain water, I incorporate chicken broth when boiling the pasta. It’s a simple trick I learned from my mom, and it infuses the noodles with a foundational layer of savory flavor from the very beginning. Trust me, it might sound a little unconventional, but it makes a world of difference, ensuring your pasta isn’t just a vehicle for sauce but a contributor to the overall deliciousness.

For the Creamy Custard Base

The custard is what transforms mere cheese into a velvety, decadent sauce. Each component plays a vital role:

  • Whole Milk and Heavy Cream: The perfect marriage of these two dairy powerhouses creates a rich, smooth, and incredibly creamy mac and cheese without making it overly dense or greasy. This blend forms the luscious sauce as it melts with the cheeses in the oven.
  • Butter: Interestingly, butter is used solely to grease the casserole dish. We only need about 2 tablespoons for this purpose. It’s crucial not to add butter directly into the mac and cheese sauce, as this can cause the cheese to separate and result in an oily texture – something we definitely want to avoid for that perfect creamy consistency.
  • Sour Cream: A delightful addition for a touch of tangy brightness! The sour cream not only enhances the complex flavors of the various cheeses but also adds a subtle depth that beautifully balances the richness of the dish.
  • Cream Cheese: Do not skip this! Cubes of cream cheese, folded into the macaroni, create exquisite pockets of gooey, melt-in-your-mouth cheesiness. As it bakes, it contributes to an unparalleled smooth and luxurious texture that sets this mac and cheese apart.
  • Seasonings: A thoughtful blend of spices elevates the cheese flavor. We use ground mustard to accentuate the cheesiness, dried thyme for an earthy aroma, onion powder for savory depth, and a hint of cayenne pepper for the tiniest, delightful kick of heat. Of course, a pinch of kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper are essential for overall seasoning. We also add a tiny pinch of nutmeg, which surprisingly enhances the dairy notes in cheese sauces.

The Star of the Show: The Five-Cheese Blend

The cheese is, without a doubt, the most important element of this recipe. For an unparalleled experience, I highly recommend sourcing your cheeses from Murray’s Cheese. They offer an incredible selection of the world’s best cheeses, delivered right to your door across the U.S.! These cheeses are legitimately exceptional. I confess, I had to exercise immense self-control to keep from snacking on them all while grating! When they bake down in the oven, they transform into an unbelievably creamy, glossy sauce that coats every single noodle like a warm, luxurious hug. Enough raving – here’s the magnificent blend you’ll need:

  • Asiago Cheese: A delightful Italian cheese, Asiago shares similarities with Parmesan but boasts a slightly sweeter, nuttier profile with a more pronounced sharpness and character. Its robust flavor pairs exceptionally well with the inherent saltiness of the prosciutto, creating a fantastic counterpoint.
  • Gruyère Cheese: While perhaps not your typical mac and cheese choice, once you experience Gruyère, you’ll want to add it to all your future cheese sauces. This Swiss cheese is wonderfully nutty, with delightful hints of browned butter and a subtle fruitiness. It melts beautifully, contributing incredible depth and sophistication. It’s become my new favorite cheese for creamy pasta dishes, and I cannot recommend it enough.
  • White Cheddar Cheese: This particular white cheddar cheese offers a pleasant sweet tang while maintaining the beloved richness and familiar savory profile of a traditional cheddar. It provides that classic, comforting cheese flavor essential to any great mac and cheese, but with an elevated nuance.
  • Smoked Mozzarella: If you adore smoky flavors, you absolutely must try this cheese! Its distinct, lingering smokiness adds an incredible dimension to the mac and cheese, harmonizing perfectly with the salty notes of the prosciutto. It introduces an unexpected but incredibly welcome depth that truly makes the dish stand out.
  • Gouda Cheese: There’s just something about Gouda that inspires a happy food dance! With its slightly sweet, caramel-like flavor, it melts into the mac and cheese with an exceptional smoothness, providing that elusive je ne sais quoi. Its creamy texture and rich flavor truly elevate the sauce to an art form. You’ll understand the magic once you taste it!

The Crispy Breadcrumb Topping

No baked mac and cheese is complete without a glorious, crunchy topping. Our breadcrumb mixture is simple yet utterly effective:

  • Panko Breadcrumbs: These Japanese-style breadcrumbs are renowned for their light, airy texture and superior crispiness, far surpassing standard breadcrumbs.
  • Crispy French Onions: The store-bought kind works perfectly here! These add an extra layer of savory crunch and a subtle onion flavor that is simply irresistible.
  • Melted Butter: To bind the panko and French onions, ensuring a golden, toasted crust.

The Savory Star: Prosciutto

Prosciutto is more than just cheese’s best friend; it’s a star in its own right. Murray’s not only excels in cheeses but also offers exquisite prosciutto. Their commitment to quality means no additives or sulfates – just the purity of “sea salt, time, and air.” This dedication results in a rich, nuanced flavor profile with a perfect balance of salty and savory notes. Knowing that you’re enjoying such a clean, naturally preserved product makes it even more delightful. When crisped, this prosciutto transforms into tiny bursts of concentrated, irresistible flavor that weaves throughout the mac and cheese, providing a luxurious counterpoint to the creamy sauce.

Expert Tips for Mac and Cheese Perfection

Achieving the perfect prosciutto mac and cheese requires a few key insights. Follow these tips to ensure your dish is nothing short of spectacular:

  • Mind Your Salt Intake: This recipe is naturally salty due to the prosciutto and the diverse cheese blend. Therefore, use additional salt very sparingly. Always taste your mixture before adding extra seasoning, especially after incorporating the prosciutto. You can always add more, but you can’t take it away!
  • Grate Your Own Cheese: This is a non-negotiable step for truly creamy mac and cheese. Pre-shredded cheeses often contain anti-caking agents like cellulose, which prevent them from melting smoothly and can result in a grainy sauce. Freshly grated cheese, however, melts beautifully into a velvety, cohesive sauce, delivering the luxurious texture this dish demands.
  • The Murray’s Cheese Advantage: For the ultimate flavor, consider sourcing your cheeses from Murray’s Cheese. Their commitment to quality and diverse selection ensures you get the finest ingredients. You can visit their three shops in New York City, their dedicated Mac & Cheese shop (Murray’s Mac & Cheese), or their full-service bar and restaurant (Cheese Bar in Long Island City). For those outside NYC, their products are available at over 1,000 cheese counters in Kroger and Kroger-owned stores across the U.S., or conveniently online at murrayscheese.com for nationwide shipping. Investing in quality cheese truly makes a difference here.
  • Room Temperature Dairy: For the smoothest sauce, ensure your milk, heavy cream, sour cream, and especially cream cheese are at room temperature. Cold dairy can shock the cheese, leading to a clumpy sauce or uneven melting.
  • Don’t Overcook the Pasta: Cook your elbow macaroni (or chosen pasta) to a true “al dente” stage, meaning it should still have a slight bite. Remember, it will continue to cook in the oven, so slightly undercooked pasta is better than mushy pasta.
  • Resting Time is Key: After baking, let your mac and cheese rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to set slightly and prevents it from being too runny when scooped, ensuring every serving holds its incredible creaminess.

  • Step 1: Prepare Your Oven and Pasta. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a large pot, bring a generous amount of salted water and chicken broth to a rolling boil. Add your elbow macaroni pasta and cook until it is perfectly al dente, following the package directions. Drain the macaroni thoroughly and set it aside. This chicken broth step is crucial for deeply flavored pasta.

  • Step 2: Crisp the Prosciutto. Chop the prosciutto slices into small pieces. Heat a small frying pan over medium-low heat and drizzle in a tiny bit of olive oil. Add the chopped prosciutto and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes beautifully crisp. Remove the crispy prosciutto from the pan and set it aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess fat.

Pour the rich cheese mixture evenly over the pasta and mix gently to ensure every noodle is coated. Then, scatter the cubed cream cheese throughout the macaroni; no need to fully incorporate it, as it will melt into delightful gooey pockets during baking.

  • Step 5: Incorporate Prosciutto and Final Seasoning. Gently fold the crispy prosciutto into the macaroni mixture. Taste the mixture and add more salt and pepper as desired, keeping in mind the saltiness of the prosciutto and cheeses. For an extra cheesy touch, sprinkle a little additional smoked mozzarella over the top before adding the breadcrumbs.
  • Step 6: Prepare the Breadcrumb Topping. In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the panko breadcrumbs and toss them together with the melted butter until fully coated. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Evenly sprinkle this breadcrumb mixture over the top of your mac and cheese in the baking dish.

  • Step 7: Bake and Serve. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes to 1 hour, or until the top is beautifully golden brown and the cheese sauce is bubbly and hot. Recipes FAQs: Your Mac and Cheese Questions Answered

Can you freeze macaroni and cheese?

Absolutely! This prosciutto mac and cheese can be frozen to enjoy later. Store it in an airtight, freezer-safe container. It will keep well in the freezer for up to three months. When you’re ready to indulge again, simply let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat gently in the microwave or oven until warmed through. You may want to add a splash of milk or cream when reheating to restore its original creaminess.

Can you use almond milk for macaroni and cheese?

I generally do not recommend using almond milk for this particular mac and cheese recipe. Its fat content is very low, making it similar in consistency to water, which will compromise the rich, creamy texture we aim for. If you’re looking for a dairy-free alternative to whole milk and heavy cream, I suggest using full-fat cashew milk combined with a high-quality vegan or dairy-free heavy whipping cream substitute. These options will provide a much better flavor and texture closer to the original.

Can you use buttermilk in macaroni and cheese?

Yes, you certainly can! Buttermilk is a fantastic ingredient that can truly enhance mac and cheese. Its high fat content and distinct tangy flavor add an exciting complexity and depth, cutting through the richness of the cheeses beautifully. If you enjoy a slightly more pronounced tang in your cheese sauce, buttermilk is an excellent substitute for a portion of the milk or cream.

Can I prepare Prosciutto Mac and Cheese ahead of time?

Yes, this dish can be partially prepared in advance. You can cook the pasta and crisp the prosciutto. The cheese sauce mixture can be assembled separately (without adding to pasta). Store these components in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days. When ready to bake, combine everything, add the cream cheese and prosciutto, top with breadcrumbs, and bake as directed, possibly adding 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.

What is the best way to reheat leftover mac and cheese?

For best results, reheat individual portions in the microwave, adding a splash of milk to loosen the sauce and prevent it from drying out. For larger portions, place in an oven-safe dish, cover with foil, and bake at 300°F (150°C) for 20-30 minutes, or until heated through. Again, adding a bit of milk or cream before reheating will help maintain its creamy texture.
